Acronyms and Abbreviations

These are acronyms and abbreviations explained that you might find riddled throughout the site.

Next to each letter heading is the standard military phonetic spelling, used in radio communications.

– A (Alpha) –

  • ACU – Army Combat Uniform; typically referring to the greenish/grey digital camo pattern used until recently (currently being replaced by the Scorpion W2

– B (Bravo) –

  • BUG – Backup Gun

– C (Charlie) –

  • CCW – Carry of Concealed Weapon
  • CCDW – Concealed carry of deadly weapon
  • CHP – Concealed Handgun Permit (note: this is the correct designation in the state of Colorado)

– D (Delta) –

– E (Echo) –

  • EDC – Everyday Carry; typically refers to weapons/equipment carried daily. May also refer to medical/survival equipment carried daily.

– F (Foxtrot) –

  • FMJ – Full Metal Jacket; refers to the bullet (the part of the round that leaves the barrel of a gun). It is typically lead, but “jacketed” or encased in a harder metal (usually copper). These are not hollowpoints

– G (Golf) –

  • GSR – Gunshot Residue; often useful to investigators at crime scenes. This is left on the shooter’s hands, as well as the target’s (if the target is close enough)
  • GSW – Gunshot Wound

– H (Hotel) –

  • Handgun – Any gun designed to be shot with one hand; can refer to pistols or revolvers
  • HD – Home Defense, or defense inside a home
  • HDD – Hard Disk Drive; basically, the part of a computer that stores data for long-term use

– I (India) –

– J (Juliet) –

  • JHP – Jacketed Hollow Point; generally the preferred self defense ammunition type.

– K (Kilo) –

  • Kilo – Kilogram, or approximately 2.2 pounds
  • Klick – Kilometer, or 0.621 miles

– L (Lima) –

  • LAC – Legally Armed Citizen
  • LAN – Local Area Network (typically, the network of a single building or perhaps a campus, like a college)

– M (Mike) –

  • MAN – Metropolitan Area Network (typically a single network covering a whole city)
  • Mb – Megabits
  • MB – Megabytes (as different from Megabits, above)
  • Mobo – Short for motherboard
  • MWAG – Man With A Gun; See WWAG

– N (November) –

– O (October) –

– P (Papa) –

  • Pistol – Refers to semi-automatic handguns, not revolvers
  • PPQ – PolizeiPistole Quick Defense / Police Pistol Quick Defense, a semiautomatic pistol made by Walther. It is my current EDC

– Q (Quebec) –

– R (Romeo) –

  • RAM – Random Access Memory; or just “Memory”, as used by computers and most “smart” devices
  • RKBA – the Right to Keep and Bear Arms

– S (Sierra) –

  • S&W – Smith and Wesson, a popular gun manufacturer
  • SD – Self Defense

– T (Tango) –

– U (Uniform) –

  • UCMJ – Uniform Code of Military Justice; the “law” that all military members are held to. Generally far more restrictive than civilian law.

– V (Victor) –

  • VA – Veteran’s Affairs

– W (Whiskey) –

  • WAN – Wide Area Network (a network covering a large city or larger; may or may not be in the control of a single person or group)
  • Wheel Gun – Synonymous with Revolver
  • WWAG – Woman With A Gun

– X (X-Ray) –
