I think if you follow this site, even infrequently, you will know that I am a huge supporter of the 2nd Amendment and its application to the everyday citizen. And the Supreme Court agreed with me in District of Columbia et al. v. Heller:
Putting all of these textual elements together, we find that they guarantee the individual right to possess and carry weapons in case of confrontation.
See, I believe in the individual citizen’s right to carry a firearm for legal defense of the self and others against both private aggression (mugging, rape, murder, etc.) and government overreach (tyranny).
I’m also of the belief that the 2nd Amendment should and does allow for a private citizen to own any firearm that can be used by an individual. I’m still on the fence whether crew-served weapons should be allowed for private citizens. Sure, some firearms like the M249 S.A.W. and the M240B are considered crew-served by the military, that’s only because they generally need a second soldier to carry the extra ammo and tripod. Since this is a matter of weight, and not actual operation, I don’t consider them “crew-served” in my above classification.
It’s known among many of my friends and family that I carry a pistol for self-protection. About half of the time, I carry openly, so I’m not one of those “C.A.N.T.” (Carry Always, Never Tell) people.
I also believe in the power of Open Carry in many areas (not where illegal, of course). I have participated in many calm and sane discussions precisely because I openly carried. I was able to educate a few people on the legalities, safety, responsibility and rights of carrying firearms. Some have even thanked me and shook my hand as a result.
But just because I believe in open carry doesn’t mean I do it 100% of the time. In some places, I cannot legally openly carry; places such as Denver and most colleges. So, I got my concealed handgun permit (CHP), which allows me to carry (concealed) in Denver, in state-run colleges and universities and many businesses who would ban open carry.
What I Carry
I carry a Walther PPQ M2 9mm full sized handgun in a Blade-Tech Classic Eclipse holster. Sure, I could carry something slimmer like a Walther CCP, but I prefer to have a higher ammo count and a full-sized grip on which to get a hold. I also carry a secondary 15-round magazine in a custom mag carrier system from HBAR Tactical. My Leatherman Wave (1st Generation, circa 1998) is in the second pouch of the mag carrier with a MagLite XL50 flashlight in the third pouch.
As a backup weapon, I carry a Magnum by Boker knife with a glass breaker, strap cutter and tanto pointed blade. I am still working on changing the orientation of the pocket clip, so I can put it in my pocket “tip up” for faster deployment.
